Santa Rosa Seminar Draws a Crowd

SANTA ROSA, CA (Aug. 5, 2008) – More than 250 people attended a TOC seminar on "The Business of Racehorse Ownership" at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa on Saturday, August 2. Host Vic Stauffer, track announcer at the fair, was joined by special guest, trainer Steve Sherman. Stauffer, an owner himself, discussed several scenarios with Sherman on acquiring a racehorse, selecting a trainer, the basic costs of ownership, and the ins and outs of claiming. Sherman, who learned his trade from father Art Sherman, was very insightful, using real life examples to help educate participants. A question and answer session followed their presentation, and attendees were then able to meet with Sherman and TOC representatives for additional information.
Upcoming TOC educational events include a Conformation Clinic at Fresno Fair on Saturday, Oct. 11, and "Ownership 101 – Financial Planning and Taxes" on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Golden Gate Fields.
TOC is the official organization serving new, veteran and future Thoroughbred owners in the state. It represents, advances, and protects owners’ interests and rights in legislative, administrative and business matters. Additionally, the organization provides ongoing educational opportunities for current and prospective owners, regularly presenting programs on Thoroughbred ownership including Ownership 101 Seminars, Advanced Horse Courses, and Conformation Clinics.
