Del Mar, CA (Aug. 3, 2008) – A seminar hosted by Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Del Mar Racetrack was enjoyed by an enthusiastic and engaged audience of 35 prospective and new horse owners, where a panel discussed everything from choosing a trainer to costs of ownership. Speakers Madeline Auerbach, Aron Wellman, and Gayle Van Leer talked about their own experiences becoming horse owners, and offered insights and advice to anyone interested in investing in racehorses.
Auerbach, who is best known for her successes with the progeny of her stallion, Unusual Heat, shared some interesting stories and tips from the perspective of an owner and breeder. An owner for more than 30 years, she is also a member of the TOC board of directors and serves as its Vice President, Southern California.
Wellman, a Southern California attorney, is Racehorse Administrator for Team Valor. Among the stars he has syndicated and managed are graded stakes winners, Valbenny and Three Degrees. He provided a thorough overview of fractional ownership through partnerships and syndicates.
Van Leer, a bloodstock consultant, has worked in many capacities in racing, including as racing manager, private trainer, and sales consignor. Considered an expert in a wide range of fields, including Thoroughbred auction sales, she had some interesting tips on buying at horse sales.
Following a question and answer session, participants were given barn tours by trainers Lewis Cenicola, Leandro Mora/Doug O’Neill, and Glen Stute.
TOC’s next scheduled educational event will be a conformation clinic at Santa Anita and Fresno Fair on Saturday, Oct. 11.
