New Northern Calif. Vet Seminar Proves Popular with Owners

Albany, CA (June 1, 2008) – The inaugural Northern California Veterinary Seminar hosted by Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) attracted more than 40 participants to Golden Gate Fields on Saturday morning. The event featured veterinarians Rick Arthur and Kim Kuhlmann, and trainer Aggie Ordonez. Arthur is Equine Medical Director for the California Horse Racing Board and has been a practicing veterinarian on the Southern California racetrack circuit for more than 30 years. Kuhlmann, a practicing veterinarian on the Northern California racetrack circuit since 1983, has been an owner and breeder for over 20 years, and is currently a member of the TOC Board of Directors. Ordonez, a Northern California based trainer/owner, is the daughter of long-time trainer and former jockey Pete Anderson.

Covering a variety of topics, the panelists focused on the role of the on-track veterinarian and the trainer-veterinarian relationship. The panel also discussed synthetic surfaces, steroid use, equine hospitals, and the role of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) in equine welfare. The panel discussion was followed by a lively question and answer session.

The seminar also included a tour of the Golden Gate Fields Equine Hospital, led by hospital director, Dent Caton. As an added bonus, Dr. Kuhlmann explained the steps a horse is taken through for a surgical procedure and answered questions relating to the clinic.

TOC is the official organization serving new, veteran and future Thoroughbred owners in the state. It represents, advances, and protects owners’ interests and rights in legislative, administrative and business matters. Additionally, the organization provides ongoing educational opportunities for current and prospective owners, regularly presenting programs on Thoroughbred ownership including Ownership 101 Seminars, Advanced Horse Courses, and Conformation Clinics.
