Lou Raffetto, a graduate of Georgetown University, has worked in many capacities at the racetrack, including as a groom, trainer and racing official.
He served as a racing secretary at Laurel Park for seven years (1978-84) before moving to Monmouth Park as assistant general manager in 1985. Raffetto then spent nearly 10 years in Boston, beginning in September 1991, and earned rave reviews as the executive vice president of racing at Suffolk Downs. He helped set the stage for the initial full-scale simulcasting operation at Suffolk in 1992 and also engineered the lucrative programs that put the Massachusetts Handicap back on the map, a race of national prominence that drew horses such as Cigar, Skip Away and Real Quiet. Following those successes, he accepted the role as chief operating officer of the Maryland Jockey Club in January 2001 and added the role of president of the organization five years later. Raffetto was responsible for all aspects of the operation, including overseeing the Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. During his tenure, Maryland racing enjoyed a period of growth that included an expansion of wagering into other jurisdictions via simulcasting of its product to other racetracks, off track betting facilities (OTBs) and advance deposit wagering systems (ADWs). Most recently, he was the chief executive officer of the National Steeplechase Association (2008-2010), where he established the inaugural running of the US Steeplechase Championships, a five-hour live event that was broadcast nationally on NBC Universal in October 2009.
