Make California Racing More Competitive - Support Higher Purses

The California Legislature is currently considering Assembly Bill 2414, which is a measure that would increase the takeout on exotic wagers from 2%-3% on par with other major racing states and direct all the incremental revenue to PURSES.  Projections are that this could raise overnight purses by as much as 25% to 30%.
 
As Thoroughbred Owners, you are well aware of out-of-state racing circuits supplementing their purses with funds generated from alternative forms of gaming such as slot machines.  As a result out-of-state owners are not bringing their horses to California, and local horses – along with associated breeding, training and other support services – are leaving the state in order to compete for higher purses offered elsewhere.  AB 2414 would make California more competitive with the other slots states. 
 
The TOC supports AB 2414, which would enhance California’s ability to compete with other states for high quality horse racing.  Given the importance of this measure we encourage members to contact their legislators today to urge a “Yes” vote in support of AB 2414.
